YAKIMA -- Yakima City Councilman Norm Johnson and Yakima school board President Vickie Ybarra are expected to announce Wednesday their intentions to run for the state House seat held by retiring Yakima lawmaker Mary Skinner.
Johnson, a Republican, scheduled a news conference for 1:30 p.m. in front of City Hall. Ybarra, a Democrat, set hers for 9 a.m. at the city park on the corner of Second Street and Yakima Avenue.
Half a dozen potential candidates have arisen since Skinner surprised Yakima with her retirement plans two weeks ago. Ybarra and Johnson are the first to schedule formal announcements.
Skinner, who has colon cancer, had until recently said she planned to seek an eighth term in the state House. The candidate filing period for the office begins June 1 and ends June 6.
