Prep baseball/fastpitch roundup -- Windsor pitches Selah to CWAC-clinching victory

Yakima Herald-Republic

A topsy-turvy CWAC baseball regular season reached its conclusion Tuesday with Selah as the champion and three teams tied for second place.

The Vikings clinched the top spot with a 7-1 conquest of Othello which ran their league record to 16-2 and their overall mark to 17-3. Their second straight title and sixth since 2000 will give them the top seed in district tournament.

The logjam for second place exists between Ellensburg, East Valley and Ephrata. The Bulldogs, swept in a Saturday doubleheader at Selah, topped EV 6-5 at Ellensburg while Ephrata won 12-1 at Wapato.

As a result, Ellensburg, East Valley and Ephrata all finished 12-4 in the CWAC, although a tiebreaking system established before the season has left the Red Devils with the No. 2 district seed, Ephrata with No. 3 and Ellensburg with No. 4.

First-round matchups in the double-elimination tournament next Tuesday will thus find Wapato at Selah, Prosser at East Valley, Quincy at Ephrata and Othello at Ellensburg.

At Selah, Justin Windsor's second one-hitter in three days led the Vikings. He had shut out Ellensburg in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday.

Against the Huskies, he struck out four and walked none while also going 3-for-4. Stephan Schmidt drove in four runs -- three with a bases-loaded double in a
six-run fourth inning.
