You won't get the party atmosphere, the special snacks and live music. But you also won't have to fight the crowds as much during this weekend's pre-barrel tastings at wineries throughout the Yakima Valley.
And, you will still get to taste unfinished wines straight from the barrel, starting today.
In contrast to the big to-do that is Spring Barrel Tasting -- which is April 25-27 -- this weekend's affair is a quieter, more intimate event that allows for more one-on-one time with the winemakers and less jockeying for position to get a pour.
More information is available through Wine Yakima Valley, 965-5201, www.wineyakimavalley.org, or Rattlesnake Hills Wine Trail, 965-4521, www.rattlesnakehills.com.
However, if you like the pomp and pageantry of Spring Barrel Tasting, remember that some wineries require a "reserve ticket," which you can purchase in advance through Wine Yakima Valley.
