Valley Hills Funeral Home, Zillah

YAKIMA - Helen Mae Matson, of Zillah, was born to Ross and Juanita McElroy in Pacific Grove, California on April 24, 1926, and passed away November 20, 2009 in Yakima at age 83.

Helen moved with her parents to the Yakima Valley after graduating from high school in Santa Rosa, California. Here she met her future beloved husband Harold, of Zillah. They were married June 14, 1944, and lived on the family fruit ranch.

Helen was known for her warm and generous nature. A member of the Seventh-day Adventist church, she devoted many hours in fund-raising for the local church school. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, quilting, sewing, and crocheting. She especially treasured her husband and their family, and was anticipating a wonderful Thanksgiving with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Helen is survived by Harold, her husband of 65 years; their son, Neal and his wife Dianne of Lewiston, ID; granddaughters Lisa (Glenn) Blackwelder of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Debra (Jonathan) Matson-Visscher of British Columbia; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Blackwelder, and identical twins Timothy and Matson Blackwelder; and her sister Betty Davis, of Palm Springs, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Cecil.

At Helen's request, private family memorial services will be held.
