Claude D. Ludwig

YAKIMA - Claude D. Ludwig died suddenly on June 24, 2009 in Yakima, Washington. He was born on Dec. 22, 1925 in Kelso, MO to John and Mathilda (Westendorf) Ludwig. He received his early education in a one-room schoolhouse where his father taught.

After high school, he joined the Navy, serving on a transport ship during World War II, spending time in the Philippines and Japan. He then served in San Diego during the Korean Conflict.

He attended the University of Oregon, graduating with an accounting degree and then passing the CPA exam. He first worked for the accounting firm of Frame and Whiting. Later, he would start the firm that eventually became Day, Ludwig, and Criddle.

Claude married Dorene Wilton on March 1, 1962 in Yakima. With Claude's daughter and Dorene's four boys, plus another son born to them, he had six children.

Claude enjoyed taking care of his yard, planting and caring for a vegetable garden each year, playing bridge, and going to lunch with "the guys" two or three times a week.

He is survived by his wife, Dorene, daughter Pamela Egan, son Doug Ludwig, and stepsons David, Dan, Dale, and Duane Wilton, sister Marge Bollinger of MO, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His parents, a brother and a sister preceded him in death.

At his request, there were no funeral services. On June 27, 2009, Dorene, the children, and their spouses met at the family home for a dinner. Afterward, there were stories to tell, reminiscing to do, many laughs and a few tears as we remembered a husband and our dad. All of Claude's children agree that we can attribute our success in life to the fact that our dad was there for us, guided us, and never expected anything but the best from us. Failure was never an option for us.

Valley Hills Funeral Home took care of arrangements. Claude will rest at Terrace Heights Memorial Park in Yakima.
