Tom Wisniewski figures out how much rice they'll need while his wife Dana checks the label on a can of pineapple as they make a dinner of chicken with a pineapple topping and rice on Aug. 12, 2008 in Yakima. Dana and Tom and their two children get $300 a month in food stamps which lasts 2-3 weeks. When the food stamps are exhausted they use local food banks to get by for the rest of the month. Though the food stamps don't go as far as they used to because of rising food prices, Tom counts himself lucky because he and his family can fall back on the generosity of his church and the food banks. " A lot of people don't have that" support, he said.
