Readers are encouraged to use these forums to discuss issues affecting the
Yakima Valley. Debate the ideas presented in stories and other comments, but
refrain from personal attacks and offensive remarks aimed at others; e.g.,
you may call an idea idiotic, but don't say the person is an idiot. The
Herald-Republic reserves the right to remove any comment for any reason.
Examples include material that is obscene, encourages illegal activity or
stereotypes based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs and
other factors. Continued violation of these guidelines will lead to
suspension or revocation of your ability to post comments. If you believe a
comment is inappropriate, you can bring it to our attention by clicking the
"report violation" link by each comment. Guidelines revised Jan. 12, 2010.

I sincerely hope that the chosen replacement will be a person with the time to give to do the job right, is a business-minded person, (as opposed to a bureaucrat), is not a political activist or someone who will further a "cause" with the prestige of the position, and not chosen simply because the person is a member of a minority group and the council want to salve it's conscience by "jumping on the bandwagon of diversity". More specifically, I would hate to see us join in the practice of reverse discrimination just to put an Hispanic on the council only because they are Hispanic. I hope whoever it is will be chosen solely on the basis of their qualifications to do the job, not just to have a token member of another demographic.
