YAKIMA, Wash. -- When Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy visited a private school in New York state recently, the school’s newspaper couldn’t cover the event.

The reason? Some say censorship.

According to an article in the New York Times, Kennedy had visited Dalton school in Manhattan on Oct. 28 to discuss the separation of powers, federalism, Isaac Newton and George Washington.

But before the Daltonian newspaper could publish the article, Justice Kennedy’s office had insisted on approving it.

Kennedy’s office maintained the request was made to ensure the accuracy of the quotes. It had received a draft of the proposed article and had returned it to the newspaper the same day with “a couple of minor tweaks,” to better reflect the meaning the justice had intended to convey, a staff member said.

However, the Daltonian believed nothing could be published without Kennedy’s approval. The article is expected to be published in the newspaper’s next issue.
