SELAH, Wash. -- Organizers of the first “Run with the Cougars” at Selah’s John Campbell Elementary School want to say thanks to supporters.

The fun run took place Nov. 12 and was the culmination of the Mileage Club, a running program that takes place during lunch each Friday for all John Campbell students.

The fun run was designed and directed by John Campbell Elementary teacher Dawn Gunner and Selah High School teacher and cross-country coach Rick Becker.

Kindergartners ran a half-mile in the first race of the day. Next up were first- and second-graders who ran a mile. In the last race, third- and fourth-graders ran a mile and a half.

There were nearly 100 finishers in all.

The top three boys and girls in each race were awarded trophies. And all students received ribbons.

Save-On Foods donated several turkeys and cakes that were given as random prizes. Organizers also wish to thank the grocery store as well as parents, teachers and the high school cross-country team.

The event went so well, organizers say, that they are already planning the next fun run. It might take place in spring and expand to include Lince Elementary School students.
