Which 10 movies would you take to a desert island?
YAKIMA, Wash. -- My friend Joe Rexrode covers Michigan State sports for the Lansing State Journal and is, without question, the man to go to for Spartan sports news.
But I noticed last week that ol’ Joe (I call him that because he was 26, or maybe even 27, before he graduated from MSU) has started using his State Journal blog to write about... Read this post
Poets, visual artists team up for 'Word/Image' at Allied Arts
YAKIMA, Wash. -- I got a chance to see some of the work that’ll be on the wall Monday for the opening of the "Word/Image" exhibit at Allied Arts.
It’s going to be an interesting show.
The idea behind it -- randomly pairing 16 local poets with 16 local artists -- is intriguing to begin with. The cross-pollination between distinct disciplines can lead artists to places they might not otherwise go.

YAKIMA, Wash. -- By now, you’ve hopefully read our coverage of Sunday’s Elton John show at the Yakima Valley SunDome.
But there’s always the story behind the story, the "sausage making," if you will. So, for anyone interested in what ... Read this post
Upcoming concerts to feature some of the Greatest Songs of All Time
YAKIMA, Wash. -- I saw the cover of Rolling Stone magazine the other day while I was waiting in line to buy a Slurpee -- get off my back, it was hot out -- and I was surprised to see they’d updated their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.
I recognize that Rolling Stone, the "gray lady" of rock magazines, is not exactly relevant in this 21st-century Pitchfork age (e... Read this post
Did somebody say On magazine?
YAKIMA, Wash. -- This is the week for you music fans out there to pick up an On magazine.
We’ve got a cover story on Elton John as well as short features on Lyle Lovett, Joan Jett and Gladys Knight -- all of whom play local venues thi... Read this post
Need advice from a maladjusted weirdo? Ask The Indoorsman!
YAKIMA, Wash. -- Due to overwhelming demand (one person, actually, and even he only said it "might not be a bad idea") On magazine’s maladjusted mystery columnist, The Indoorsman, will begin doling out advice later this year.
Because he’s as curmudgeonly as someone in his early 30s can be, The Indoorsman has decided to ca... Read this post
I love rock ’n’ roll, too, Joan
YAKIMA, Wash. -- A show by Joan Jett would be about the biggest thing going on an average weekend in the Yakima Valley.
Of course next weekend -- July 16-18 -- is not average. We’ve got Lyle Lovett at Maryhill Winery on Saturday, July 17, followed by Read this post
Elton or Gladys? Don't forget Lyle
YAKIMA, Wash. -- The following blog post will be presented in the form of a one-act play, illustrating the embarrassment of riches we have coming up musically.
(Curtain opens on an unadorned stage. I'm standing there talking to some dude.)
Dude: There’s never anything to do in the Yakima Valley.
Me: Sure there is, you idiot. There’s live music every week, wine tasting, summer festivals, art openings... Read this post
On magazine, because you deserve a break today
YAKIMA, Wash. -- It’s about time we updated this here blog, huh?
Vacations and holidays and whatnot have conspired to keep it silent here for more two weeks, but in the long run nobody can silence the steamrolling force of entertainment news and analysis that is On magazine.
Or something.
Anyway, it’s sneak preview t... Read this post
On magazine: A little dab’ll do ya
YAKIMA, Wash. -- That headline up there is the famous Brylcreem slogan (see video below), which I found appropriate for this week’s On magazine because it’s full of little dabs that’ll do ya.
Here’s the rundown on those dabs:
